Things to Know After Wisdom Teeth Removal

Select Dental & Orthodontics is a Torrance dentist office that knows how to manage the symptoms that can arise from a wisdom tooth extraction.

Getting your wisdom teeth removed can be a hassle but it is an important part of maintaining your oral health. It is just as important to have the proper treatment after they are removed. Follow these methods to treat the effects of wisdom teeth removal.

Swelling

If swelling occurs, it can be helpful to place an ice pack outside of the mouth for about 20 minutes on and off. If the tooth is infected, it may be better to use a warm compress instead.

Bleeding

Bleeding is to be expected after extraction. Keep a gauze pad over the area for 30 minutes after the wisdom tooth is removed to stop the bleeding. Another option is using a moist teabag instead of gauze for the same amount of time. This is done to help the blood clot set and stop the blood flow. If further issues arise, Select Dental & Orthodontics can pair you with a Torrance dentist that can offer you a wide range of options, including recommending an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

Oral Care

Things to Know After Wisdom Teeth Removal

Try not to eat, drink, or talk for at least two hours after the tooth has been removed. Do not exercise for at least a couple of days after the surgery and do not smoke or spit heavily on the day of the surgery. It is safe to use diluted mouthwash or rinse your mouth out with salt water 12 hours after the surgery. Gently brush your teeth the night of the procedure but avoid the vulnerable area.

Food & Drink

Drink room temperature or cold fluids after the extraction. Eat soft foods like mashed potatoes, yogurt, eggs, or fruits/vegetables that have been liquefied to drink. Stay away from carbonated drinks and foods that break apart easily and leave particles in the mouth such as popcorn.

Medication

Take any pain medications or antibiotics prescribed by your dentist. If you are taking heavy pain medication, avoid operating heavy machinery or drinking alcohol. For a Torrance dentist you can trust, schedule an appointment with Select Dental & Orthodontics.
