This Is Why Your Teeth Are Sensitive

At our Torrance dentist office, we are often asked a lot of questions regarding tooth sensitivity: What causes it? How can I treat it? Tooth sensitivity is very common and can affect anyone. Tooth sensitivity is most often what you feel when you bite into something hot or cold, and your teeth feel achy and sensitive.

Causes of Tooth Sensitivity

This Is Why Your Teeth Are Sensitive

The most common reasons for this include a worn tooth enamel, cracked teeth, or is due to an exposed tooth root. However, it is always best to visit your Torrance dentist so they can accurately diagnose the reason for your sensitive teeth. Some people are more prone to sensitive teeth than others, while others use teeth whitening kits that can result in sensitive teeth. Tooth sensitivity usually occurs when dentin loses the protective covering over the teeth. The tubules allow hot or cold foods to seep into the cells and nerves inside the tooth. This is what causes your teeth to ache or feel extra sensitive.

How To Prevent Tooth Sensitivity

You must have proper oral hygiene in order to prevent your gums from receding and causing tooth pain. If you aren’t brushing your teeth enough, plaque and tartar can build up and can potentially result in gum disease. This also occurs if you aren’t brushing correctly or even over-brushing. Gum problems can arise and it is always best to seek help should you have any dental problems, rather than endure through tooth pain and risk it getting worse. Something as small as tooth sensitivity is a reason to visit the dentist, not avoid it. Anything that may seem like a small dental problem can potentially turn worse or may be a symptom of something else.

Treatment For Sensitive Teeth

Tooth sensitivity can be treated. Most often, your Torrance dentist will suggest ceasing products that may be increasing your tooth sensitivity, like teeth whitening kits. They will also suggest switching out certain products like regular toothpaste for desensitizing toothpaste, which can help. Desensitizing toothpaste helps block the transmission of sensation from the surface of the tooth to the nerve. It usually takes a couple of washes with this toothpaste before it takes effect.
